Noyal-sur-Vilaine. Nearly 7 km of hair collected at Triballat

“I cut my hair to give it to women who have not chosen to lose it,” explains Manon, an employee of the Triballat company in Noyal-sur-Vilaine (Ille-et-Vilaine). Like twenty-three collaborators, she joined the day placed under the sign of generosity and solidarity.

6,700 cm of hair and 165 kg

Monday, November 15, 2021, the headquarters of the Triballat group turned into an ephemeral hairdressing salon. "Twelve hairdressers followed one another to cut at least ten centimeters and style the volunteer employees' hair for free", explains Solenn Douard, the group's general manager. She is also a member of the Rennes branch of the Soroptimist association.

It was she who came up with this “slightly crazy” idea of raising awareness among as many employees as possible about hair donation. A natural resource too often considered, wrongly, as waste. “Indeed, we don't say it enough but our hair, short or long, is precious, provided it is recycled”. In France, every day, a million people have their hair cut. This represents 4,000 tonnes of waste.

For the occasion, a collective Tous de Mèche was formed. A collection has been underway since the beginning of October, to encourage employees to bring in their hair and that of their hairdressers. "165 kg of hair collected from sixty hairdressers in the area, a very good performance".

In addition, 185 donors of locks longer than 10 cm, i.e. 6,700 cm of cut hair, will enable 18 to 30 wigs to be made.

Hair longer than 10 cm will be donated to the Fake Hair Don't Care association to make natural wigs for people with cancer. "Sorority is firmly part of the DNA of Triballat, which has always had women in its leadership since its creation in 1951."

hair has value

This family business, headed by Olivier Clanchin who embodies the third generation, markets many brands such as Sojasun, Vrai, Sojade, Terre et Céréales and Petit Billy.

100% French products with 93% ingredients of French origin. Triballat claims a sustained commitment on a daily basis: pioneering, innovative, respectful of people and the environment...

The smaller hair will be donated to the start-up Capillum. They can be used for water and soil depollution. “Hair is particularly good at absorbing hydrocarbons that pollute the oceans. The hair is capable of naturally absorbing up to eight times its weight in hydrocarbons.

Green farming and gardening appreciate 100% natural mulching mats, made from recycled hair, to limit watering and weeding. And the keratin extracted from the hair is used for medical research. "Our cut hair does have value."

other companies

This operation makes sense with the group's values and commitments: “We want the company to be more than an actor that manufactures and sells. We want a company that does purposeful work, in which and with which everyone thrives. A company that contributes to a model of society that we will be proud to leave as a legacy to future generations. »

Solenn Drouard's greatest wish is “that other companies take over”.
