Minimum size, maximum age are all beauty contests as rigorous as Miss France?
The controversies around the conditions of eligibility for the Miss France competition reappear each year.At the same time, around the globe, other national elections make the choice of diversity.
Measure at least 1.70m, do not present a visible tattoo, not having children, never having been married, not having participated in the production of erotic images...There are many, the conditions that young women must fulfill (aged 18 to 25, maximum) who wish to compete for Miss France. So many prohibitions that come to life, each year, on the stage of the election where young, beautiful, thin and large women parade by young women...And arouse their share of controversies, feminist associations denounce an archaic and sexist competition.
The 2022 vintage is no exception: last October, the association dare feminism!decided to attack the assistance in court for non-compliance with the labor code and discrimination. These controversial rules are far from being a French exception: everywhere around the globe, beauty contests persist in highlighting women responding to the most conventional codes. But the lines begin - timidly - to move in certain regions of the world. While the election of that which will succeed Amandine Petit, the current title holder, takes place this Saturday at the Zenith in Caen, an overview of these competitions (sometimes) (a little) less formatted.
When the silhouettes diversify
A rule is common to the majority of beauty competitions: candidates must neither married nor mothers. The maximum age to present itself, if it can go up to 28 or 30 years, remains significantly the same. For the rest, at the time of #MeToo, the release of the Word of Women and Body-Positivism, some European countries have taken the turn to which France is stubbornly refused.Their freedom may come from the fact that unlike France, several of these states organize two distinct competitions: one to elect the one who will represent them in the election of Miss Monde, the other to send a young woman to defendtheir colors in Miss Universe. Thus, the Miss Malta or Miss Norway competitions welcome more diverse bodies, when the candidates of Miss Universe Malta and Miss Universe Norway display more traditional measurements.
In Iceland, after several resounding controversies around the formatting of candidates, the Miss Universe Iceland and Miss World Iceland competitions have opened up to different types of silhouettes. In 2017, the young Stefanía Tara þrastardóttir, overweight, was among the five finalists of the latter.
The absence of prerequisites concerning the size and the weight remain rare, and some countries seem to seek to conceal their requirements in the matter. This is the case of Belgium and Denmark: in the list of requirements presented on their sites, they stick to questions of nationality, age and family situation. But among the information that candidates must provide by filling out their registration forms are their size, weight and/or size of their clothes.
In Italy, more flexible criteria
In Italy, it was another type of diversity that interested the international press in 2018.That year, the competition put forward people with disabilities with Chiara Bordi, an 18-year-old woman equipped with a left leg prosthesis.Sign of difficulties in changing mentalities: his participation had earned him a flood of insults on social networks.Digital mockery that did not prevent her from finishing 2nd runner -up.

The Italian edition is closing more flexible criteria than its French equivalent: in 2016, the first runner -up thus proudly displayed its size 42 on the catwalks, but had also been victim of a denigration campaign on the Internet.A few months ago, it was a participant in the first stage of the selections that had been insulted and threatened for presented himself in the casting with her baby, having found no one to keep him.
""The French are not ready""
It is one of the other subjects that is starting to weigh on the Miss France competition: never a transgender woman appeared on the election scene. Some international delegations have however already taken the plunge: in 2016, the Belgian Céline Van den Bossche presented itself in the election of Miss Flanders -Western - which she did not win.Only four years before her participation in the competition, she had not yet carried out her transition to the female sex.
The next step took place in three years later, in Spain.Angela Ponce, Transgender model, was elected Miss Universe Spain in 2018.A title that allowed him in December 2018 to become the first transgender candidate to participate in the election of Miss Universe.
The lines also move across the Atlantic where Kataluna Enriquez, Miss Nevada 2021, became the first transgender woman to compete in Miss USA as the world reports.A title won on November 29 by her Smith, Miss Kentucky.
A step that the French competition is not yet ready to jump, according to Sylvie Tellier.Questioned on the subject several times, the director of Miss France expressed her skepticism in the Parisian in 2019:
Because if the old regulation required candidates that they were ""born of female"", the new one indicates that it is necessary to be ""registered in civil status as being of female sex"".But here again, a transgender candidate could come up against another prohibited: unlike other countries of the world, the French competition does not accept young women who have used cosmetic surgery.Only restorative surgery is authorized - to see in which category the organizers would classify the interventions necessary for a transition to the opposite sex.
The Miss Germany case
In the inclusive competition, the German election won the crown. Two years ago, the organizers completely redesigned the spirit of this election, which is now more intended to be a platform for women: the age limit is 39 years old, almost 15 years older than mostInternational equivalents and mothers are welcome, as are transgender or overweight women.
The mode of election also differs from the one who is observed in France. In France, the regional misss are elected by a jury of professionals and the public has no say that the evening of the election, when the finalists were appointed.Across the Rhine, the 160 candidates are subject to the vote of Internet users: it is they who determine who will be able to participate in the election, which will take place next February.
Bettina Orth, 34 -year -old German and mother of five children living in Moselle, told BFMTV.com The reasons for his participation in this redesigned competition: ""For me, Miss Germany is a woman who represents her country, regardless of her appearance, or her private life,"" she said.""She must tell a story, inspire people, touch them.Sometimes real beauty comes from the inside.""
A competition not to be confused with Miss Universe Germany, an election with much more rigorous requirements which designates the beauty queen which will represent Germany during the election of Miss Universe.
Sur le même sujetSo many advances to more inclusive beauty contests that are exceptional, and which have not yet reflected in international competitions. It only takes a few clicks on the Instagram accounts of the Miss World and Miss Universe elections to note that sizes 34 remain over-represented.In addition, in 70 years of existence, the Miss Universe competition has only crowned six black women.Clémence Botino, who will represent France during the 2021 vintage this Sunday in Eilat, will she change the situation?
