Livestock: Cameroon relies on Montbéliarde cows to produce more milk
PublishedUpdatedVideo length:4 min.Article written byN.Bertrand, J.Barrère, C.Marchand -France 2France Télévisions20 HoursEdition of Wednesday, March 10, 2021French dairy cows, Montbéliardes, have been welcomed to northern Cameroon. Highly productive, they should make it possible to produce more milk, and thus strengthen the country's dairy industry.
Northern Cameroon is traditionally a breeding ground. The Cameroonian government has launched an unprecedented initiative there: in Garoua, dairy cows from France have been welcomed to strengthen the dairy sector, because the country still imports a lot of its milk consumption. A very different environment for these cows, during the acclimatization period. They traveled 5,000 kilometers by plane, supervised by veterinarians. “It's a source of pride to have them here with us,” explains the agricultural engineer in charge of their well-being.
Welcomed like queens
These Montbéliard cows are capable of producing five times more milk than their Cameroonian colleagues. Most of Cameroon's milk is imported in powder form. To remedy this, the government borrowed 80 million euros from the World Bank. The cows are distributed among breeders in the region. A dream for one of them, who paid 3,600 euros for two cows, a substantial sum. Fresh, pasteurized milk, yogurt, cheese, butter... She hopes to quintuple and diversify her production.
