Heavy rainfall could raise lake levels in Switzerland

Heavy rain again fell on Switzerland overnight from Saturday to Sunday. Ticino was particularly affected. Some 63 liters of rain per square meter fell on Monte Generoso, SRF Meteo said on Twitter.

In neighboring Lombardy (I), the rainfall was even more extreme, with up to 120 liters locally, indicates the meteorological service Meteocentrale. In German-speaking Switzerland, precipitation varied between 30 and 70 liters per square meter.

On the northern slope of the Alps, it is the Schönegg, in the canton of Zug, which was the most watered, with 70 liters. In Bad Ragaz (SG), 60 liters of rain fell in 24 hours. On the Hörnli in the canton of Zurich, the precipitation reached 55 liters.

In total, the rainfall for the month of July, which ended on Saturday, varied from 99 liters in Visp (VS) to 593 liters in Robièi (TI). In many places, the month will go down in history as the wettest since measurements began.

According to MeteoNews, heavy rainfall is expected to raise lake levels. By mid-morning, apart from certain rivers in German-speaking Switzerland, the danger level of the main lakes and rivers was low. New rains are expected during the day on Sunday, but the worst is over, specifies SRF Meteo.
