House: How to perpetuate your roof?
A roof that lasts is a maintained roof. Indeed, climatic conditions, pollution and the natural wear and tear of the tiles can damage them. And by postponing the cleaning sites too much, you end up paying thousands of euros for a complete renovation that could have been avoided.
In order for your roof to fulfill its role of protection and sealing for as long as possible, it is necessary to take care of it regularly. And you can perform these operations yourself.
The big cleaning
Among the great enemies of a roof, there are moss and lichens. They appear over the years, especially if you have trees around your house. Particularly invasive and tenacious, they can lift the tiles, make them very porous and threaten their impermeability. The maintenance of your roof therefore begins with a thorough cleaning of these undesirables.
To do this, you can use a high-pressure cleaner, which will rid your roof of the most encrusted moss. Always work from top to bottom. Be careful when doing this because the jet, which is very powerful, can damage the tiles. If you're worried about damaging them, scrub with a stiff brush and soapy water instead. Then apply an anti-foam product to prolong the protection.
The ideal is to carry out this major cleaning at least twice a year, once in spring and once at the beginning of autumn. Indeed, avoid the seasons when it rains a lot, because the treatments can be swept away by the rain, and the periods of hot weather, which cause their evaporation.
Apply a water repellent treatment
To protect your home from humidity problems, it is also recommended to treat your roof with a water-repellent product. It will help to fight against water infiltration, provided that several coats are applied to the surface to be sprayed. This precaution will protect your house from any damage caused by bad weather (frost, rain, snow), by limiting the porosity of the tiles and making them smoother so that water flows more easily.
However, this treatment must rest for at least 24 hours to be fully effective. Be careful, if you put an anti-moss product on your roof, take a good look at the composition because some also act as a water repellent.
Replace broken tiles
In addition to these cleaning steps, to perpetuate your roof, you must replace the missing, cracked or damaged tiles. It is important to regularly check the condition of your roof because a broken tile can cause water infiltration problems. Always start at the top of the roof, working your way down. As the tiles are always nested on top of each other, all you have to do is lift them to remove the damaged one. If necessary, you can use a wedge to have your hands free and work more peacefully.
Then, put each element back in its place and be careful not to leave any visible holes. You can have this done by professionals.
