Coatings on old substrates do not know the crisis

Driven by a heritage that needs to be restored and building facades to renovate, the market for coatings on old substrates continues to grow.

Everyone agrees: the market for coatings on old substrates is doing well. "In the Paris region, it remains buoyant thanks to the condominiums that are renovating the facades", notes Olivier Jollet, president of Véga Industries.

For Mathias Habert, former building market manager at Parexlanko, “it has even experienced annual growth of +2% since 2008”. Consequence: “Companies involved in new buildings are moving more and more towards renovation, lime saw an increase of + 5% in 2014”, reveals Luc Tornos, sales director at Socli.

Ready-to-use dominates the market

Manual coating applications remain the prerogative of restoration, channeled by the Historic Monuments and Buildings of France "which push to proscribe the organic and the cement base", notes Lény Soy, sales director at Keim.

But today, this market for coatings on old substrates in renovation “is dominated by projected products”. Especially since invested by these companies from the new, rather accustomed to single-layer. From now on, these coatings in renovation are ready-to-use to compensate also for a workforce which does not "necessarily have the know-how, and pressed by the deadlines", explains Olivier Jollet.

On ITE, these ready-to-project solutions also take “market share, by facilitating preparation on site in compliance with the rules of the Art and without asking questions”.

Mineral trends

Still, this market for renovation coatings creates added value, “provided that they are lime-based and breathable products. Otherwise the prices will drop”, specifies Luc Tornos. Enthusiasm is strong, according to Mathias Habert, “for aerial lime that we hope is pure. But a little hydraulicity is needed to adapt to old supports, to provide flexibility and luminosity”.

Moreover, demand awaits the possibility “of improving the aesthetics thanks to an ecological mineral paint which provides additional and lasting protection”, adds Lény Soy. It is even a definite evolution “towards mineral finishes with limewash or silicate paints”.

When another trend emerges according to Mathias Habert: that of specific lime sanitation plasters that channel salts and the appearance of saltpetre. "An answer to the problems of humidity on facades appreciated by building owners to be integrated", advises the manager of Parexlanko.

Especially since, without adding to the workforce, this service brings even more added value.
