Angers. Epiphany: the story of the Magi told in pictures in the former Saint-Aubin abbey

Today we celebrate Epiphany. A good opportunity to admire the story of the Magi recounted for nine centuries in images on the arcades of the former Saint-Aubin abbey, where we now find the buildings of the Departmental Council and the prefecture.

It is even one of the most beautiful and oldest representations of this great classic of Christian iconography.
As we have begun to share the galette des rois (Epiphany is today Thursday, January 6), it is interesting to look at these remarkably preserved venerable paintings, which have been dated to the 12th century. . They recall first of all that the prefecture and the Department are installed in a former Benedictine religious monument, the Saint-Aubin abbey founded in the 6th or 7th century.
The Magi against Herod
There are still some beautiful remains, the most visible being the Saint-Aubin bell tower which faces Place Michel-Debré. Next door, the court of the prefecture draws the old cloister which retains a dozen arcades dating from the twelfth century.
