Acrylic painting - Côté Maison
Acrylic paint is a water-based paint that contains little or no solvents, is odorless, easy to apply, dries quickly and is suitable for almost any room. Of all the paints, acrylic paint is also the cheapest. Here are 7 tips for using it well.
1. Prefer dry living rooms for acrylic paints
Acrylic paint is washable but not washable. Although there are special acrylic paints on the market for the kitchen or bathroom, protected by a protective film, standard acrylic paints are recommended initially for dry rooms.
2. Calculate the amount of acrylic paint needed
To plan the amount of acrylic paint needed:
- Calculate the total surface to be painted.- Multiply this surface by two for the application of two coats.- Divide the result obtained by the rate of return indicated on the can of paint.
Always increase the quantity of paint obtained, because the manufacturers show often optimistic yield performances.
3. Prepare the surface before applying acrylic paint
The key to ensuring good adhesion of the acrylic paint and obtaining a good covering effect is the preparation of the support (wall, ceiling, etc.): the surface to be painted must be clean and dry, free of dust, oil and dirt.
- Start by cleaning the walls thoroughly with a degreasing detergent (St Marc, for example) and a sponge. - If the wall has cracks, apply a fine filler. Leave to dry, then sand with sheets of abrasive paper. - Rinse with clean water and let dry.
Protect the furniture and the floor with plastic sheeting, and stick marking tape to delimit the painting areas and protect the woodwork and electrical outlets.
4. Choose the right tools for acrylic painting
For acrylic paint, preferably use a short-haired roller or a foam roller, supplemented with a "non-drip" roller in polyamide fiber for the ceilings.
To paint the corners, use a round or synthetic bristle brush.
5. Apply an undercoat
To prevent walls and ceilings from absorbing paint, apply an undercoat with white acrylic paint. It is the cheapest acrylic paint. Then let it dry.
6. The right gestures for acrylic painting
Steps for painting a wall or ceiling with acrylic paint (acrylic wall paint or special ceiling paint):
- Start by painting the corners and edges of the room with a round brush. Stretch the paint well so as not to leave any excess thickness. - Then attack the large surfaces of the wall with a roller. Always start at the top of the wall down to the floor. Work in areas of approximately one square meter, in two crossed passages: once in the vertical direction, then a second time in the horizontal direction. - Smooth the covered areas with ample movements of the roller. Leave to dry.- Using the same technique, apply a second coat if necessary, then leave to dry.
Always start by painting the ceiling before the walls.
7. Clean tools
Tools used to apply acrylic paints should be cleaned with soap and water.
